Water Security

Water is our most vital resource, and as Ivins grows, we must ensure our water infrastructure keeps pace. Conservation will always matter, but we also need to plan for greater storage and smarter distribution so our community is secure for generations to come. Studies show that Ivins has sufficient water today, but forward-looking communities prepare well before shortages arise.

  • IDEA 1: Sand Hollow Reservoir Concept | Localized storage and recharge
Explore smaller-scale surface storage systems—like a mini Sand Hollow Reservoir concept—that can both store water above ground and help recharge our aquifers below. This provides redundancy and protects against drought.

    • [by Derek Brown] Potential need for extra water to fight fires if necessary. Reference California in January 2025- not enough water in reservoirs to fight fires.

  • IDEA 2: Secondary Water Lines | Follow the model of Washington and Hurricane by implementing secondary water lines to homes for outdoor irrigation. This reduces strain on culinary water, keeps lawns and landscaping sustainable, and ensures drinking water is preserved for its best use. Such projects could be funded through dedicated fees, structured like a bond with a clear payoff date—avoiding reliance on property taxes.

  • IDEA 3: Regional Partnerships | [by Diana Broadhead] | Work with regional partners, including WCWCD, to explore innovative large-scale solutions. One proposal I support is encouraging a multi-state collaboration with California to expand desalination efforts in exchange for reducing their Colorado River usage, leaving more water available for Utah and our neighbors.
